Swampgas - Swampgas (1972)

EAC | FLAC TRACKS+CUE+LOG+Covers | 277 mb+3% recovery

A superb and little known album, produced by the group members and Artie Kornfeld (Wind In The Willows, Artie Kornfeld Tree...) and engineered by Shelly Yakus at A&R Studios, NYC. A psychic chiropractor, Charlie Tuna, is also credited on the album! Consisting of eight long tracks, all but one are composed by Baird Hersey. A mixture of some fast numbers (Patato Strut, Don't), some melancholic ballads, two complex tracks (Eulogy, Trapped In The City) and a raga with sitar (Egg Shell). Baird Hersey was obviously influenced by Hendrix, but goes further than his influences and the guitars (electric and acoustic) are especially interesting. Kim Ornitz's voice sounds a bit like Henry Tree's vocalist. Baird Hersey released at least two solo albums: Lookin' For That Groove in 1978, consisting of jazz rock (Novus/Arista) and ODO OP8 FX in 1980 (Bent), which was very experimental, with tape loops. Artie Kornfeld had previously played with The Changin' Times.

Gnidrolog - Lady Lake (1972, 1995)

EAC | CD Image | FLAC+CUE+LOG+Covers | 216 mb+3% recovery

Progarchives:
GNIDROLOG are one of the more overlooked bands that took part in the progressive rock explosion in Britain around 1971-73. Intricate band, with an ecletic music that is very hard to categorize. Their music is a blend of blusy prog, with horn instruments, and intense vocals on top of it. They might appeal to GENTLE GIANT, JETHRO TULL and VDGG fans. Still, pick up "In Spite of Harry's Toenail" or better yet, their opus "Lady Lake", and prepare to be bowled over. After a long (27 years!), GNIDROLOG re-banded and made a new studio album, "Gnosis", in 2000.

Тracklist:
1. I Could Never Be A Soldier
2. Ship
3. A dog With No Collar

Van Der Graaf Generator - Vital (2 CD, 1978, 2005)

EAC | CD Images | APE+CUE+LOG+Covers | 604 mb+3% recovery

Originally released as a double LP, this eight-song live album makes a perfect 75-minute CD. The lineup (uncredited) was Peter Hammill on vocals, guitars, and keyboards; Nic Potter on bass; Dave Jackson on saxes and keyboards; Guy Evans on drums; and Graham Smith on violin, keyboards, and vocals. The recording quality is surprisingly good, with a close, intimate sound, which is the only way one could properly capture this band live and not have the results come out like a bunch of noise. As a title, "Vital" also accurately describes the disc, for the group presents the raw, up-close, in-your-face approach that made Van Der Graaf Generator favorites of the punk bands despite the group's prog rock origins -- between Hammill's loud, raspy vocals and his crunchy overamplified guitar, "Still Life," "Door," and "Pioneers Over C" all sound almost like punk band performances, and the medley of "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers/The Sleepwalkers" isn't much different despite the presence of a violin in there.

1. Ship Of Fools
2. Still Life
3. Last Frame
4. Mirror Images

Gravy Train - Gravy Train (1970)

EAC | CD Image | FLAC+CUE+LOG+Covers | 264 mb+3% recovery

Review by Dave Thompson:
Jethro Tull and Comus had a baby, and they named it Gravy Train. That's not strictly accurate, of course, but as the band's eponymous debut opens with the fluid changes of "The New One," it's not too far of a reach, either. Richly harmonic, daringly jam-laden, and peppered with guitar roars that simply defy comparison, Gravy Train is the sound of the British underground at its most joyously liberated peak -- a time when a bunch of apparent freaks could simply go into a major recording studio and let rip. Except Gravy Train's concept of "letting rip" has more in common with a symphony orchestra than the Edgar Broughton Band. Without, of course, the orchestra. But there's a moment in the midst of "Think of Life" that cannot help but put one in mind of later Deep Purple, as the flute and guitar battle for supremacy, while the blues workout "Coast Road" is as breathtaking as any of that genre's better-feted exponents. If Gravy Train has any faults whatsoever, the fascination with peculiar vocal effects can grow a little wearing, especially as frontman Norman Barrett already appears to have a fabulous range of his own -- "Dedication to Sid," in particular, glories in such trickery, although the heartbeat bassline that runs through the number is so hypnotic that it's easy to forget everything else that's going on. In fact, Gravy Train is littered with moments like that, an album of so many surprises that even when you think you know it, you can still find something else you'd never noticed. And it all adds up to a genuine minor classic.
